The Merseyside club Will Not Alter Forward-Thinking Philosophy Amid Recent Slump, Insists Head Coach Slot
Liverpool's head coach has stated that the club's hierarchy share his views regarding the poor performance streak and he refuses to compromise their forward-thinking philosophy in pursuit of a turnaround. The tactician acknowledged that six unsuccessful results in seven outings was unacceptable ahead of Saturday's match against Aston Villa.
Growing Expectations During Difficult Period
Slot accepted the scrutiny was intense before his makeshift team were eliminated from the Carabao Cup against their Premier League rivals. However, he maintained that this pressure to arrest the slide is not coming from the team's proprietors or management structure following a summer transfer outlay of approximately £450 million.
"Our views align," remarked Slot, whose side will meet Real Madrid in the Champions League and visit Pep Guardiola's side in the domestic competition.
Team Strength Continues Undoubted
The coach is convinced his team "have an unbelievable squad if they are fully healthy and all ready for the programme we are facing". He mentioned that the summer investment in footballers like the attacking midfielder and Alexander Isak, who is expected to be sidelined again against Aston Villa through fitness issues, had left the club "in an excellent position for the near future and the years to come".
Integration Challenges
When questioned about why his team were having difficulty blending, he responded: "That's not particularly helpful. 'Why, why, why?' I offer insights and people say I'm making justifications. I can identify five or six reasons why we are not winning as much or suffering defeats as we do but, as I always emphasize, there are insufficient justifications to have a performance streak as we had now."
- No matter if I could list multiple factors
- As Liverpool manager you cannot lose
- In truth six losses from seven matches
Defensive Numbers
Only Burnley (21) have faced more big chances from open play this season than the Merseysiders (19). The league leaders, the Gunners, have conceded only two. Yet Slot denies the champions have been too open and maintains there is no basis to sacrifice his attacking principles for a defensive approach after 10 games without a goalless performance.
"From my perspective we don't conceding a lot of chances so I don't see a reason to modify our philosophy completely but we must improve in not conceding goals," he declared.
Specific Instances
"Versus the Red Devils, how many chances did we concede? Versus the German side when we were ahead by two goals, we hardly conceded a shot on target. In every match we played until now we haven't allowed a numerous openings. Definitely not. We do concede a bit more than the previous campaign but that is related to us being 1-0 down so you take a bit more risk. But typically I don't feel that our issue is that we allow too many opportunities. Our challenge is we fail to convert the openings we produce."
