Exactly 30 anniversary after the first Toy Story movie debuted, launching the animation giant as a major animation studio and introducing audiences to iconic characters like the cowboy doll (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 landed recently, offering a glimpse into the storyline but leaving fans curious how it will resolve the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Frog-Shaped Tablet Spooks the Toys

The preview reveals the young girl — who received Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a brand new plaything, one that alarms Woody, Buzz, and the crew. Bonnie gets her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the frog-shaped tablet will come to life just like the rest of her playthings. However, the toys appear to consider it as a danger intending to supplant them, which it likely will.

The Cowboy's Comeback: Unanswered Questions from Toy Story 4

An element the trailer avoids is why Woody is back with his friends in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 saw him embark on a new adventure with Bo Peep (the actress), traveling with a fair and helping prize toys find good homes.

Certainly, the filmmakers will explain the consequences of Toy Story 4 in the film. Witnessing him show up in the familiar setting without warning is a little strange, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And where is the stuntman toy (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

Fortunately, some elements are continuing from the earlier movie. The final act the cowboy did before departing for his fresh path was pass his sheriff badge to the cowgirl (Joan Cusack), leaving her in charge of the toy domain. In the teaser displays the badge attached to her shirt.

It is hoped she is still the key figure among the toys.

Toy Story 5 arrives in theaters on the scheduled date.
