Individuals who experienced sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have voiced fresh optimism following their initial encounter with the new Pope at the Vatican.

The board president, heading Ending Clergy Abuse, commented that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so early in his leadership sent a strong message about his dedication to addressing the problem.

Global Zero-Tolerance Policy Advocated

The group is advocating for a global strict approach that would defrock any priest who admits to or is proven of sexually abusing a child. This policy has already been adopted in the US.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "opposition in some parts of the globe" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is pushback," Hickey stated.

Inherited Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the position in spring, has taken on this persistent problem that has haunted the Catholic Church for many years.

Earlier attempts to resolve the situation included an unprecedented meeting on paedophilia within the institution and changes to canon law to explicitly criminalize sexual abuse.

Personal Link

For Hickey, who uses gender-neutral pronouns, the campaign for worldwide adoption of the measure is personal. The Canadian activist revealed they were abused by a priest who was subsequently transferred between various churches.

"Hopefully this will set the tone for his leadership, because we want to work with him," they stated. "We have the same goal, we seek to eliminate clergy abuse."

Historic Meeting

Multiple representatives of the coalition, which includes victims and supporters from over thirty nations, engaged with the Pontiff in his official residence.

The meeting, initially planned for 20 minutes, extended to a full hour, during which the Pope "mostly listened to us," according to Hickey.

The pontiff was characterized as "very understanding" when listening to the story of a woman abused at a Catholic residential school for Indigenous children in North America.

They added the leader was "tender" about their personal story and appeared "very humble, funny, and approachable."

"Survivors have consistently sought a voice in discussions and I didn't perceive like he was giving us lip service," they stated. "I felt like he was sincere, realistic, and very open and eager to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The group is advocating that revisions to canon law will enable the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted specialists and compiled documents that they plan to submit to the pontiff.

"He seemed interested in looking at it," Hickey remarked.

Accountability Emphasized

A recent Vatican-commissioned document highlighted the "necessity of a efficient process for the stepping down and/or dismissal of religious officials or personnel in cases of misconduct or failure to act."

The document also noted that survivors consistently emphasized the "critical requirement for bishops and senior officials to be made responsible for inaction and concealment."

Path Ahead

Hickey revealed they told the Pope at the start of their discussion: "This is as much a risk for him to participate in a dialogue as it was for us."

Following the encounter, Hickey voiced optimism for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, coming together and building a relationship and continuing to strengthen that relationship is a step in the right direction," they stated.

They added that they shared with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a difficult period, I believe like we can change how the story concludes - he valued that."
