Meteorologists are saying a chilly commencement to the new year, with wintry precipitation likely throughout a lot of the UK. Revelers are being urged to bundle up as sub-zero temperatures are expected for New Year's Eve.
Hogmanay Celebrations Go Ahead In Spite of Warnings
The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay celebrations are planned to go ahead, unlike last year's postponement. This is in spite of weather alerts for snow over northern Scotland.
"An icy New Year's Eve evening for those partying, so extra layers will be needed," noted the weather service.
Celebrations Under Mostly Clear but Chilly Skies
In other parts of the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks shows, with no rain and clear skies. Readings are due to be low, so additional clothing a necessity, according to forecasters.
In more northern areas, skies will be cloudier, but this is not anticipated to impact visibility for seeing fireworks. "It won't be low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," added one forecaster.
Broad Snow Warnings for Friday
Heading into Friday, snow alerts are active for Northern Ireland and from Wales, through the north-west, the West Midlands and reaching London and most of the south-east of England.

Temperatures Expected to Plummet Further

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have settled in some areas by Friday morning, reaching up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Medical Warnings Released
In addition, serious cold weather health warnings have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with temperatures likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
