Manchester United Set to Sign German Striker Lea Schüller from the Bavarian Giants
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of completing the signing for prolific German striker Lea Schüller in a permanent move away from Bayern Munich.
A Major Acquisition for the WSL Side
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, has been a consistent goal-getter for her club and the national team. She has netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for her country. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Bayern was expected after she appeared to be fighting back tears while applauding the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
Reports in late December that the German women's top flight was set to lose one of its leading strikers. Per reports, all the paperwork for the transfer have now been completed.
Consistent Goal Threat to Boost United's Attack
The experienced striker's signing is expected to provide a significant boost to the team's forward line. Schüller has been remarkably consistent in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, up to and including the last term, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in 2021-22 season with a haul of 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
The acquisition of the German international coincides with a period when United appear to be gathering momentum.
Recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs as a seeded team and a victory in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The acquisition of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a three-and-a-half-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japanese playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become popular figure since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a senior figure commented: “Miyazawa is now a vital component to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and skill enables her and the team to dominate play from central areas.”
The new defender, having joined from a side from the American league, added: “You can sense how much they [United] have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the top European competition.”
