Information Available About the Those Lost of the Bondi Terrorist Incident
No fewer than 16 lives lost their lives and in excess of 40 were wounded when attackers shot at a Hanukah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident local authorities have called a act of terrorism.
In the latest update, authorities have stated the death toll stands at 16, encompassing one of the alleged gunmen. Additionally, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.
The victims are yet to be officially identified, but investigators think their ages range from 10 and 87 years old.
Here are the individuals who have been named so far.
Eli Schlanger
Originally from London rabbi Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.
Described as a father-of-five, he worked as the associate rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Family members and acquaintances described him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.
“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a relative asked.
Schlanger and his wife had recently celebrated the arrival of their newest son in October.
Alexander Kleytman
Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, as stated by his wife.
She described the events before the shooting, stating they were standing when the gunfire erupted. “He moved to protect me because he wished to be near me,” she said.
The pair were both Holocaust survivors, having endured unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later immigrated to Australia from Ukraine.
Dan Elkayam
The French authorities have announced that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.
Publicly, a senior official said that France stood with his family, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.
“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.
One Child
A young girl, aged 10 who was taken to the a children's hospital has been confirmed among the fatalities, according to police reports.
One Israeli Citizen
One victim from Israel was a fatality during the attack, according to reports referencing the Israeli foreign ministry.
Those Injured
From the 42 people taken to hospital, many remain receiving treatment, with five in critical condition. The injured comprise two officers who attended the scene.
A casualty is a member of the public who attempted to intervene to confront one of the gunmen. Described as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.
Arsen Ostrovsky
Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a community leader. It has been reported he was injured and is receiving treatment in hospital.
Communicating, he recounted the scene as an “absolute bloodbath,” but also praised the response of those who came to assist. He said he felt it was a “miracle” he was alive.
Evan Zlatkis
Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was another casualty in the shooting. He described he heard “a large number” of gunshots.
“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I’ve been shot myself. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
