Powerful cold-season winds brought walls down upon flimsy shelters sheltering people displaced by war in Gaza, killing no fewer than 4 individuals. This tragedy underscores the dangerous living conditions that continue after over 24 months of devastating bombardment and severe lack of humanitarian assistance.

Truce Offers Little Relief from Harsh Weather

While a truce has been active from last fall, humanitarian organizations report that residents broadly lack the adequate housing necessary to withstand recurring cold-weather events.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which received the bodies, reported on this week that the dead include a pair of adult females, a girl, and a man.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on the same day that a 12-month-old infant died of hypothermia during the night.

"International actors has allowed us to witness loss of life in every possible way," stated a family member after the burial. "While it is correct the shelling may have temporarily stopped, but we have seen every conceivable cause of fatality in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Family Buried in Shelter Collapse

As per the medical center, three members of a one household — 72-year-old Mohamed Hamouda, his teenage granddaughter, and his daughter-in-law — were fatally injured when an 26-foot high wall collapsed on top of their tent in a coastal area of Gaza City. No fewer than five others were injured in the incident.

Family members on Tuesday began removing the debris that had entombed their family and rebuilding the temporary homes for those who remained.

Aid Distribution and Continuing Crisis

The UN and its aid organization allies were distributing tents, plastic sheeting, warm covers and clothing as well as food and hygiene items across Gaza, stated the relevant UN coordination body.

Most of the population live in improvised shelters because their homes were reduced to rubble over the course of the hostilities. Humanitarian organizations say not enough building supplies are entering Gaza during the truce.

Casualty Figures Since the Ceasefire

The Gaza health ministry, part of the administration, reports over 440 people have been fatally shot by gunfire and their remains brought to hospitals after the ceasefire began. A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children's fund, stated on Tuesday that no fewer than 100 children below eighteen years old – sixty boys and 40 females – had been lost their lives after the ceasefire started because of military operations, such as drone strikes, air raids, artillery fire and employment of live ammunition. Those figures, he said, reflected cases where enough details had been gathered to warrant documentation, but the total toll is expected to be higher. He noted that hundreds of minors had been injured.

"While 'explosions and shootings have decreased' during the truce, they have not stopped," the spokesperson told journalists at a UN briefing in the Swiss city by video from the Strip. "Therefore what the international community now terms quiet would be considered a catastrophe in any other place," he concluded.

Third Cold Season of Hardship

Gaza’s population of more than two million people has been struggling to keep the cold weather and bad weather away while facing lack of assistance and a absence of sturdier temporary housing, which is badly required during the winter months. It’s the third cold season after the conflict involving Israel and Hamas began on 7 October 2023, when fighters stormed into Israeli territory and killed approximately 1,200 individuals and took hostage 251 others into Gaza.

The local health authority reports over seventy-one thousand four hundred people have been fatally injured in the subsequent military campaign.
