Arne Slot Maintains He Is Secure and Has Liverpool's Backing After PSV Humiliation
Arne Slot conceded that it's understandable for concerns to be raised about his position following a further heavy loss versus the Dutch champions.
The Reds endured their ninth defeat in 12 games, representing the team's poorest run since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were outplayed by the Dutch league title holders on a punishing night at Anfield.
“I am feeling safe, things are alright, I've received a lot of backing from above,” Slot stated.
“It would be nice to turn it around and secure a win of course but when you're coaching a team and not doing well then it is normal that people question you.”
He continued, “I accept my situation. This isn't the initial instance I've found myself in a challenging situation but it's necessary that we turned it around.”
Talks with The Board
Upon being questioned to elaborate on his discussions with the club's leadership, the head coach explained:
“There's regular dialogue. They are helpful to the team and to me and we have those conversations but they don't phone me all the time each day to say they trust me.”
He further stated, “During our regular exchanges I feel the confidence. However I haven’t spoken to them after this defeat yet so it remains to be seen.”
Recurring Problems and Player Response
Slot lamented familiar failings from his Liverpool side in their European defeat, namely missed opportunities and leaking goals.
Meanwhile, player Curtis Jones was more direct in his view of the current crisis.
“I haven't got the answers. Honestly, I don’t. I’m saying that to everybody,” Jones stated.
“It is unacceptable. I don't need to wait to think about it. I'm beyond feeling anger inside. I've reached the stage now where I just don’t have the vocabulary.”
He went on, “It’s hard because I’m playing for the team I support. I'm a supporter, and I’ve seen Liverpool since I was young.”
“For many years, I've not seen a Reds side going through a spell such as this with performances like these.”
He finished, “But we continue to wear the crest on our shirts. And as long as it is taken away, we’re always going to compete.”
“We will attempt to help the side back to its rightful place, demonstrate to all once more what this club is about and why people call it the best team in the world.”
“At this moment, we’re in the shit and we have to turn it around.”
