Afghan Rulers Used Discarded British Gear to Find Local Nationals Who Worked With Allied Forces, Inquiry Learns
A whistleblower has told a parliamentary probe that British authorities failed to secure classified devices enabling the Taliban to locate Afghans who collaborated with international military.
Information Leak Endangers Thousands at Risk
Person A, called Person A, stated that Afghans affected by the data leak were told to move homes and switch their contact details to avoid detection from the ruling authorities.
MPs are currently examining the Conservative government's response of a serious disclosure of confidential data affecting almost nineteen thousand individuals who had asked to move to Britain to avoid the Taliban.
The Information Breach Happened
A data file containing private information, comprising identities, addresses and sometimes relative details, was inadvertently disclosed by a worker stationed at British military command in February 2022.
The breach was discovered only in August 2023, when identities of several individuals who had sought to settle in the UK appeared on online platforms.

Aftermath of the Data Breach
Preliminary research provided to the investigation estimated that at least 49 relatives and colleagues of people concerned by the breach had been executed.
A legal restriction concerning the incident was implemented in last year and restricted all details concerning it from being made public until mid-2025.
Safety Measures
Because she was restricted, Person A and the non-governmental organization she collaborated with told individuals at risk they were supporting that they had “concerns that certain devices had been intercepted”.
“We advised that they moved if they could and altered their phone numbers. That constituted the primary information that, if the Taliban obtained such data, would lead to identification and capture,” the source testified.
Contested Findings
The source contested that internal investigation carried out by an ex-government employee had been mistaken to determine that the possession of the information by militant forces was “minimally impact an individual's existing exposure”.
“The crucial point is that these individuals are not standing up to the Taliban; they live secretly. Everything boils down to former occupations.”
The source explained disturbing treatment endured by at-risk Afghans, comprising electric shock torture, simulated drowning, and violent assaults.
“We have had toddlers who have had their arms broken to force relatives to disclose hiding places,” Person A stated.
